Troubleshoot Outlook for Windows issues

If you can open the original Outlook Data File, you might be able to recover additional items. The Inbox Repair tool creates a backup file with the same name as the original, but with a .bak extension, and saves it in the same folder. There may be items in the backup file that you might be able to recover that the Inbox Repair tool couldn't.

We can fix the problem for you, or you can use the troubleshooting steps we're providing below to help resolve these startup issues. A corrupted profile, a damaged PST file, faulty add-ins, or improper Outlook startup settings often cause this issue. Should you decide to remove a profile, back up the data files first. All offline cached content will be deleted when you choose Remove. For more information, see Introduction to Outlook Data Files (.pst and .ost). If Outlook worked correctly the last time and nothing has changed about your account configuration, then checking if things work correctly in Safe Mode is a good first step.

There’s nothing in particular fix Outlook problems to warn you about, as there are many informational and diagnostic information there, but reading the entries may lead to a clue about what’s going wrong. If you have Outlook in your startup folder, remove the shortcut from the startup folder. If anyone finds a more permanent solution, I would appreciate it. It seems like something went wrong on Microsoft update and they might recall it or fix it, so we might need to wait untill that. A vast community of Microsoft Office365 users that are working together to support the product and others.

I would say first things first is figure out if any of fix Outlook problems these actually resolves her issue, and then (if so) document it on a quick 1-pager that she can follow if/when you’re not available. When the scan is done and errors have been fixed, run scanpst.exe again until no errors are found anymore. If after scanning the file more than 3 or 4 times errors are still found, you might want to copy over your data in a new pst-file. We have tried all things mentioned above (except reconnecting the MS account), but the only solution so far is deleting the users profile. If I run an online repair and reboot her PC it will usually work for a day or two. Kinda at a loss at this point, I am thinking about wiping the PC and starting again.

Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support. You can start Outlook in safe mode, disable your add-ins, and then try to open Outlook normally. Starting Outlook in safe mode, which starts Outlook without add-ins loaded, can tell you if an add-in is the source of the problem. For a short intro about how to access and read the Event Viewer in Windows, see this Quick Tip. If these methods dose not work, you can also try a third party tool, Kernel for Outlook PST Repair tool. If anyone finds a more permanent solution, I would appreciate it.

Follow these steps to let Outlook diagnose and fix errors in your Outlook mail profile that might be causing the issue. You can create a new Outlook Data File and drag the items in the Lost and Found folder into the new data file. After you've moved all the items, you can remove the Recovered Personal Folders (.pst) file, including the Lost and Found folder. To create a new Outlook Data File, go to Create an Outlook Data File. The steps to access the repair tool vary depending on your operating system. If you can't open Outlook, or Outlook disappears or crashes, one of your add-ins may be to blame or you may need to update Outlook.

Once you've changed your password with your email provider, you can update the password in Outlook. See Change or update your email password for more information. If you've successfully sent and received email from classic Outlook before, and now Outlook repeatedly asks you to reenter your password, one of two things may have happened. If you're trying to set up an iCloud account, follow the fix Outlook problems steps in Add or manage an iCloud email account in Outlook. For Gmail accounts, see Add a Gmail account to Outlook. This option could be useful if you constantly have to wait for Outlook to rebuild its data file when you restart.

There are quite a few different causes for this, but one of the most common is a defective add-in. Here’s how to disable add-ins in Outlook even when it keeps crashing. If Outlook Desktop fails to connect, try these steps before escalating the issue to the ET&S Help Desk.

So, we have produced this list of general things to try to resolve your problem in Outlook. To edit a shared calendar, go online to your own Outlook.com calendar, open Calendar for Windows 10, or use a mobile device. If you're still unable to send or receive email, read how to Fix Outlook.com email sync issues. Blocking someone doesn't stop their email from coming to your mailbox, but it does automatically move the message to your Junk Email folder where you can review it (in case it was blocked in error).
